Chapter Summaries & Analyses
Cady enters the police station and sees a middle-aged officer named Dillow. She immediately asks for help and tries explaining what has just happened to her. Officer Dillow tries to calm her and asks for her name, assuming perhaps that she’s a guest or resident of the complex. She continues trying to explain things, and when she mentions the man she left in the woods, she simply says that he hit his head on a rock, and she fled. She realizes that, due to the fact that she doesn’t know who she is, where she fled from, or what the men chasing her want, her story “sounds kind of crazy” (26). As if to underscore this, Officer Dillow asks her if she’s on drugs or if she’s consumed alcohol. She gives him the wallet she took from her assailant. When they open it, they find the man’s name is Michael Brenner. When the phone rings, Officer Dillow answers it. He then returns and explains that they need to get her to the safety of a larger police station. Their plan is to have her lie down in the back of the car so that no one can see her while Officer Dillow drives her to the Bend police station.
