“The Long Walk: Act 4” Summary

On their journey through Manhattan, Tammi quietly thinks about the ways in which Kareem has both changed and remained the same since they have separated. She feels the urge to catch up with him in a real way, and to tell him all the things that have been going on in her life since they stopped dating, but she fights the urge. All the while, Tammi cannot help but wonder if it is possible for them to ever be friends again.

Still walking toward Brooklyn, Tammi and Kareem come upon a group on the street listening to Bob Marley. They join in dancing, Tammi only stopping when she has the sudden urge to kiss Kareem. Kareem pulls up his music on Tammi’s phone and plays it on the speaker. Tammi is impressed with the mix. Afterward, the two continue on their journey.

While walking, they talk about school. Kareem wonders why Tammi did not choose to go to NYU, which had always been her first choice. When Tammi asks why Kareem never thought to talk to her about her plans before today, he admits to being bad at communicating. He rests his forehead on Tammi’s and vaguely asks if it is too late.
